Which is a good company for a home insurance policy?

Choosing The Best Home Insurance Company is about far more than shopping for the lowest premium. You need to be able to trust this insurer to actually pay on a claim if you’ve suffered damage to your home or if it’s been damaged or destroyed by fire, flood, tornado, earthquake, or another natural disaster.

I once had a homeowners policy with Allstate when I lived in a condominium and there was water damage in a severe winter storm – and the agent who sold me this policy didn’t want to know me when I needed help and the claim was ultimately declined when underwriters insisted the damage was caused by a flood and it was not raining and water damage – but there was no flood so I had to replace the carpeting and padding at my own expense. So of course I would never again deal with Allstate again.

I’d also had a problem with State Farm when the insurance agent wouldn’t return my phone calls when I needed advice on my policy – so I do not want to deal with State Farm again.

I now have a policy with The Hartford and they just reduced the maximum amount they would pay if my home were destroyed and didn’t notify me of this reduction, so I’m currently shopping for a new policy.

I plan on using an independent insurance agent this time who represents multiple different insurance companies and who will help me with a claim should I ever have to file one.

I hope that by using an “independent” insurance broker who is not “employed” by one insurance company he will be The One to help me if and when I need help with an insurance claim.
